Be an Everyday Leader

Be an Everyday Leader

“How many of you are completely comfortable with calling yourselves a leader?”

Leadership Development expert Drew Dudley is concerned that many people consider being a leader to be beyond them. Many see leaders as world changers and entrepreneurs, and the title of leader as something we aspire to, rather than who we are.
We have all changed someone’s life — usually without even realising it. In his funny and inspiring talk, Drew Dudley calls on all of us to celebrate leadership within us.  He wants us to recognise our daily moments when we show our leadership skills and affect other people’s lives – and we should take credit for our special “lollipop moments”.In his renowned Ted Talk, Dudley tells his own story about when he realised the impact he could have on another person’s life.  It is an amazing story of a small incident to him, but an incident which changed the direction of another person’s life.  He calls it his “lollipop moment”, the moment when he showed his impact as a leader.Dudley’s message is life affirming but also makes us recognise the impact we have in our everyday encounters.  He encourages us to recognise the power in what we say to each person we meet – we may not remember an incident, but what we say may have a huge impact on the life of the recipient.“We need to redefine leadership as being about lollipop moments, how many of them we create, how many of them we acknowledge, how many of them we pay forward, and how many of them we say thank you for.”Drew Dudley’s interest in developing leadership skills became his specialism when he was the Leadership Development coordinator at the University of Toronto. In 2010 he founded Nuance Leadership Development Services, a company that creates leadership curricula for communities, organisations and individuals.  He aims to create cultures of everyday leadership – planning our actions to matter and to have a positive impact on each other.

Consider how can you have a positive impact in your personal encounters with others today? Enjoy creating and celebrating your own lollipop moments!
